Rodney Atkins returns to West Plains on March 15 to perform a second time for the Cystic Fibrosis of West Plains fundraiser benefit. During his last appearance in 2019, when this photo was taken, he helped raise over $80,000, a record-breaking amount. The funds from each concert go toward research into the hereditary respiratory disease which to date has no cure. Rick Frazier, a longtime volunteer for the cause, said it is hoped Atkins will help break the fundraising record again. The 2024 concert featuring Missouri native Sara Evans raised over $92,000, the highest to date.

Organizers of this year's cystic fibrosis benefit concert have announced the headlining artist is Academy of Country Music award-winning artist Rodney Atkins, returning after performing for Cystic Fibrosis of West Plains’ fundraiser event in 2019, helping to raise more than $80,000, setting a new record at the time. more
The winner of the Quill's Cutest Merry Pets contest, sponsored by All Pet & Equine Supply, is Norbu Shih Tzu. The winner was selected by readers who cast votes on photos displayed on the Quill's website. Norbu is the pet of Lorelei Shelton, owner of The Groom Room. Twenty-five cats and dogs and one goat were featured in two dozen pictures submitted for the contest, which ran from Dec. 11 through 23. Shelton and Norbu won a year's subscription to the Quill and a $50 gift certificate from All Pet & Equine Supply in West Plains.

An Izard County, Ark., man suffered fatal injuries in a crash at 4:04 p.m. Friday on Highway 56 in Brockwell, an unincorporated community in Izard County about 14 miles east of Horseshoe Bend, according to the Arkansas State Police. more

The Greater West Plains Area Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year award went to the West Plains Public Library and its manager, Dr. Greg Carter. Chamber Chair Eric Gibson presented the award to Carter. He said the library has embraced the arts with local art displays, and forged relationships with the West Plains Council on the Arts and the Missouri Humanities Council. The library's summer youth program saw a near-40% increase in participation, with additional sessions added to accommodate growing demand. In 2024, the library’s membership grew by 27% and saw an increase of nearly 60% in program attendance. Not counting special events, the library set a record attendance of 55,000 people, and saw 33,000 individual wire sessions and 6,000 logins to public computers. In addition, it has doubled private donations from $17,000 to $32,000. Watch the Quill next week for more photos from the event.

A group including parents of South Fork Elementary students is protesting the transfer of Howell County deputy and Student Resource Officer Shannon Sisney from his post at South Fork which he has held for about three years, and an online petition posted on change.org signed by about 475 individuals as of Friday morning. more

The West Plains R-7 School Board presented the family of Lexi Williams with a check for $15,322 at the beginning of its monthly meeting Tuesday night. Williams is a junior and a member of the girls tennis team who caught a virus in November that resulted in an immune response that caused temporary paralysis, a hospital stay and recovery including physical therapy. The fundraising effort was the result of district officials including the school board, faculty and staff, students, and other community members. A 25-year-old man from Plato perished in a crash that occurred at 8:48 a.m. Monday on AW Highway a mile north of Evening Shade in Texas County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. more

The Lincoln School was packed Monday for a ceremony remembering the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. Monday was the national holiday designated to honor the civil rights leader and his impact on the furtherance of social justice. The Lincoln School is a restored one-room schoolhouse that was the local school for Black students during the segregation era, until 1958. Since being reopened as a community center, it has been host to events dedicated to educating the public, and will be the center of several Black History Month events in February.

It’s a boy! John Craig Decker was the first baby born at Texas County Memorial Hospital in 2025, arriving at 4:09 p.m. Jan. 1, announced hospital officials, adding his parents, Nicholas and Leah Decker, Eminence, were “overjoyed to welcome their precious son, John.” Dr. Christopher Baldwin, obstetrician and gynecologist, and Dr. Kristina Grant, family medicine physician specializing in obstetrics, delivered baby John. He weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces, and measured 19 inches long. Jim and Wilda McNiell, along with Alice Wells, representatives of the TCMH Auxiliary, presented gifts and gift certificates to the new family. Local businesses, including West Plains Bank, Simmons Bank (locations in Cabool and Houston), Walmart, Forbes, Progressive Ozark Bank, Shelter Insurance (Airika Barnett-Wiseman), D&L Florist, People’s Bank of Cabool, Security Bank of the Ozarks, State Farm Insurance, S&R Insurance, the TCMH Healthcare Foundation and New Beginnings Church, donated gifts to celebrate the arrival. HOEC: Extreme cold caused power lines to shrink, leading to Monday morning outage
The Howell-Oregon Electric Cooperative has issued a peak alert notice to its members, asking them to conserve energy use through 9 p.m. today. The alert was issued Sunday afternoon ahead of single-digit overnight lows, and early Monday morning, co-op officials reported, a power outage affected 999 member households. more

The latest Dollar General store to open a new location is going up quickly at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and West Abe Taylor Street, after a home on the lot was demolished and the ground was leveled. It will be the fourth Dollar General in West Plains, and the approval for the construction was given in October by West Plains city council members. The site plan shows the 10,640 square-foot building will face Abe Taylor Street and have a parking lot entrance off of Lincoln Avenue, built on 1.62 acres.
