Willow Springs High School senior Katlyn Brixey, right, hosted a Pink Out volleyball game on Oct. 10 as part of her senior project, Willow Springs Schools Communications Director Jenny Hayward shared. Her efforts raised a total of $906 from selling shirts, bracelets and putting on fun games in between the junior varsity and varsity games. Brixey donated the funds to the Ozarks Healthcare Cancer Treatment Center. Receiving the donation from Brixey is OZH Inside Track Career Pathways Coordinator Sammi Radosevich.

Car Mart burglary suspect nabbed for more break-ins
A West Plains man arrested in October after allegedly trying to evade police has now been charged as a suspect in several break-ins and thefts at local businesses that happened in late September and early October, including the Ozarks Healthcare Pharmacy and a nearby church. more

The West Plains Public Library is holding a Christmas-themed fundraiser for the West Plains Library Foundation and organizers have invited local businesses and organizations to bring and decorate trees, which are now on display in the library. Library patrons may cast $1 votes for their favorite tree through Dec. 16, when a "Festival of Trees" party will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the winner will be announced. The festival will include free hot chocolate, a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus, and a free book for each child in attendance. The library is also accepting donations of new children's books for the giveaway. Tree themes so far include angels; books and library-related items, shown here; Dr. Seuss; Marvel comic book characters, and more to come.

MOUNTAIN VIEW — A town hall meeting held prior to Tuesday's Mtn. View City Council meeting was meant to allow public commentary and discussion of a controversial proposal to hire a city administrator. The position has reportedly had hit-and-miss success in the past and, some argue, the city can't afford the salary. more

Phillip Brege, city electric department employee, checks and changes bulbs on a Christmas wreath downtown. Three city crews were out Monday under blue skies and in warm temperatures, getting West Plains spruced up for the holiday season. Drivers around town may have noticed some of the snowflake lights that grace the city's main streets have also started going up, and the city Christmas tree will go up at the end of November. As of today, Christmas is only 39 days away.

The American Hospital Association (AHA), in partnership with the Missouri Hospital Association (MHA), announced this week it has honored Tom Keller, president and CEO of Ozarks Healthcare in West Plains, with the Partnership for Action Grassroots Champion Award. more
The Bikers United nonprofit group of West Plains recently dissolved, and to zero out the organization’s finances, members decided to go out in a big way and make donations to other local nonprofits, including a $3,393.70 contribution to the Boys & Girls Club of the Greater West Plains Area. BGC CEO Elizabeth Cawthon said the club will use the funds to help finish off a kitchen remodel at the club, in order to feed evening meals to club members. The kitchen is also used to help prepare meals fed to community children during the summer "Meet Up & Eat Up," which provides free lunches to all children while school is out. Members of the West Plains R-7 School Board will meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the high school library with a closed session, followed by an open session at about 5:30. The meeting is being held a week earlier than usual to avoid holding it during the following week's Thanksgiving break. more

A three-vehicle crash at about 11:45 a.m. Thursday in rural Sharp County, Ark., claimed the life of a 26-year-old man from Williford, a community with a population of about 70 people located about 10 miles southeast of Hardy, Ark. more

Retired Army National Guard Brigadier General Mike Pace, West Plains, served as the grand marshal for this year's Veterans Day parade, held Friday in downtown West Plains. During his military career, Pace earned many distinctive honors, and at one point was the joint force land component commander, in operations control commanding all Army units of the Missouri National Guard. He is a Bronze Star recipient who retired from military service in 2008, and during his service also was employed for about 33 years with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, achieving the rank of major and retiring as director of the criminal investigation bureau in Jefferson City. He is being driven along the parade route by the owner of the classic Camaro in which he is riding, Tillman Durham. Watch Wednesday's Quill for more parade pictures.

Local veterans, including a group of Marines at left, salute the American flag during the singing of the "Star Spangled Banner" by the West Plains High School Concert Choir. An assembly was held Friday morning at the high school to honor veterans following a breakfast sponsored by the school district and served by members of the high school Student Council.

Student Council members at West Plains High School served a Veterans Day breakfast to veterans and their families Friday morning in the high school cafeteria. American flag cookies were also served and middle school Student Council members made treat bags and penned notes thanking veterans for their service. WPHS StuCo serves breakfast to veterans
The back wheels of a trailer attached to a semiatruck overturned during a sharp turn at about 8 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of West Thornburgh Street and Lincoln Avenue in West Plains, dumping some of its load and blocking traffic at the intersection. The cab and front wheels of the trailer remained upright, and no injuries were reported for the driver, who was making a delivery to the Armstrong Flooring lumber yard a few blocks north of the intersection, off of Abe Taylor Street. Hughes Towing helped with stabilizing the trailer while West Plains police officers directed traffic around the intersection. Meanwhile the dumped lumber was offloaded while waiting for another trailer to come pick up the load.
