DAR presents Quilt of Valor to local Vietnam veteran
On Nov. 2, in the spirit of giving thanks, the Ozark Spring chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution presented veteran Douglas Pence with an officially registered Quilt of Valor, thanking him for his sacrifice and service to the nation and local community. more
Los Angeles-based author Sean Jacques was born in Ellington and graduated from Monett High School in southwestern Missouri, and drew upon his familiarity with the Ozarks in writing his debut novel "Doe Run." The book is aptly set in the fictional small town of Doe Run in the days leading up to the opening of deer hunting season, a rural Missouri tradition that Jacques was planning on partaking in during his recent visit to West Plains.

Casey is looking for a special family to take her home. The black and tan tortoiseshell kitten and is 5 months old and has a very sweet and playful personality, said West Plains Regional Animal Shelter volunteer Trish Hammen. To adopt Casey or see the other pets available for adoption, stop by the shelter between 9 a.m. 3 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. The shelter is located at 1486 BB Hwy in West Plains. While visiting with the animals, patrons are invited to check out the new shelter building which is nearly ready. “We are still taking donations to help finish the inside improvements,” said Hammen. “Volunteers are welcome to help take care of the animals, and donations of cat and dog food are needed.”

Dr. Ezra Manes is holding a book signing event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Book Nook, 203 Washington Ave. to celebrate his latest sci-fi novel. All of his books will be available for purchase, and Manes will donate the proceeds to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the American Cancer Society.

On Monday, members of the Josiah Howell chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and Ozark Spring chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met with West Plains Bank and Trust Company employees to receive their charitable contribution of $170. The funds will help purchase 10 wreaths to be placed at Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1019 E. Third St. in Mtn View, during the second Howell County Wreaths Across America event at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 14. Veterans Memorial Cemetery. B The public is welcome to accompany the wreaths that will be escorted from Mtn. View Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3009 to the cemetery by the Mtn.
