Several West Plains R-7 Schools faculty and staff attended an externship event at the Southern Missouri Technical Institute during a professional development day held Oct. 9. The staff had the opportunity to see how the academic skills students learn in classrooms are applied in work settings, including in Scott Heidy’s Commercial and Advertising design class. The day was described by participants as a powerful learning experience for everyone.

WILLOW SPRINGS TUESDAY STUDY CLUB: 2023 Fall Party
The Willow Springs Tuesday Study began its 98th season with its annual Fall Party on Oct. 3 at Club 60 in Mtn. Grove. The hostesses for the day were Pauline Cape, Kathleen Carel and Claudia Marvin. Using Claudia’s abundance of fall decorations, she and Pauline worked their usual magic decorating the banquet room at Club 60. more

Marcus Allen, lead minister at Pomona Christian Church, standing at left, recently spoke to the Sunrise Rotary Club about an upcoming trip to Dibra, Albania. A small country on southeastern Europe’s Balkan Peninsula, Albania is a former hard-line communist country, even to the point that the former USSR was deemed too soft, resulting in Albania aligning itself with China, Allen explained, adding that formerly, the official state religion was atheism. Now a unitary parliamentary constitutional republic, the predominantly Muslim populace is said to be pro-America and tolerates Christians which make up less than 2% of the population. Allen, along with Nurse Practitioner Hilda Newell and Doctors Derrick Morrison and Gary Finke, will be making their fourth trip to the eastern region of Albania to provide medical care in small villages. Newell, standing at right, stated that poverty, poor hygiene, dirty water and a general lack of transportation in the region results in numerous parasite infections and other often undiagnosed illnesses. The group will provide medical education and screening in addition to treating residents.

Last year’s Fall Festival drew a large crowd to downtown Thayer with more than 60 vendor booths to patronize and a performance from Red Line band. On Saturday, the festival returns with family-friendly activities including a car show, children’s games and a pumpkin carving contest. Musical performers this year are the Highway W Band, The Jumpin’ Jacks and Molly Corman.

The West Plains Daily Quill featured on its May 17, 1978 front page an article on the 1978 lagoon collapse that will be the focus of a presentation to be made by high school Project Lead the Way students Oct. 19. The caption for the photo reads, in part, “Dr. Pat Phillips, state epidemiologist from Poplar Bluff, photographs a second collapse in the floor of the West Plains sewage lagoon that occurred overnight, causing an undetermined amount of the remaining sewage to drain into underground caverns.” The second break, discovered the day prior to the issue’s publication, occurred just two weeks after the lagoon’s first collapse which resulted in an initial loss of 20 to 25 million gallons of sewage, the Quill reported at the time.
