Dr. Patricia Rodriguez's third-grade class at South Fork Elementary celebrated Leap Day by diving into a hypothetical adventure at Silver Dollar City, shared West Plains R-7 Communications Director Lana Snodgras. “Armed with maps and imagination, they crafted the perfect three-hour amusement park trip, where waiting in lines was a thing of the past,” she added. West Plains High School recently hosted a Senior Seminar, during which seniors got the inside scoop on local scholarship opportunities, while parents were guided through Naviance to uncover national and local scholarships. Naviance is a college planning and career assessment software. Prizes were also given away. The next Senior Seminar is planned for March 28 and will offer students an opportunity to learn interviewing tips and go through a mock interview. Members of local Girl Scout Troop 71546 of West Plains recently made 10 "Birthday in a Bag" donations and left half of them at the Giving Tree at Rescue Church on the corner of Sixth Street and Minnesota Avenue and the other half at the food pantry at nearby Martha Vance Samaritan Outreach Center. The "Birthday in a Bag" contains a disposable cake pan, cake mix, frosting and a celebration banner, recognizing that struggling families still deserve to celebrate birthdays even if they can't afford a cake and the trimmings. Co-leaders Sara Chapman and Cassandra Sloniker praised the girls for choosing the project as a way to help families and expressed pride in the troop's commitment to community service projects. 5K run: Eclipse Edition
The “5K at Galloway Run or Walk – Eclipse Edition,” sponsored by Hirsch Feed & Farm Supply, is set for 8 a.m. April 6 and is one of the “Party in the Path” events to celebrate the upcoming total solar eclipse in West Plains. There are four days of activities scheduled beginning on April 5 and culminating with the eclipse itself which will begin at 1:54 p.m. on April 8.

Black River Technical College’s fire science program in Pocahontas, Ark., recently held a chili cook-off to raise money that goes to the BRTC Foundation to fund scholarships for fire science students. Fire departments from Ash Flat, Hardy, Highland, Walnut Ridge, Pocahontas, Paragould and Hoxie gathered to face off using their favorite chili recipes. The overall winner was Highland’s Fire Department’s Koby Herring, left. “This fundraiser is very important to the fire science program,” said Fire Science Program Director Alan Haskins, center. “All proceeds help ensure there are funds available for prospective firefighter students who do not qualify for financial aid.” Joining Herring and Haskins is BRTC Black Hawk mascot Stryker. Amanda Grisham's South Fork Elementary first grade class recently did 100 acts of kindness to celebrate 100 days of school. First graders handed out Sonic drinks to teachers and staff with a kind message such as, “I appreciate you.” The children also took time to read to preschool students, made Post-it notes with kind affirmations and placed them on classroom doors, cheered for kindergarteners as they went out to recess and told them to have a great day, provided cookies to several classes, and wrote letters and drew pictures for others. “It was fun to watch the kindness spread throughout the building,” said district officials.
Celebrating 100 days with kindness

Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Ark., has announced the list of students who completed degree requirements to graduate at Fall Commencement, held Dec. 16 in First National Bank Arena. The list includes graduates from 45 states and territories and 18 other countries.

Several faculty members at Missouri State University-West Plains were recognized for their years of service to the university during the annual Employee Recognition Luncheon Jan. 26 at the West Plains Civic Center. Awards are handed out annually to university employees who have reached one of the five-year milestones of service to the Missouri State University System. The honorees were congratulated by MSU-WP Chancellor Dennis Lancaster and MSU System President Clif Smart.
