Becca's Closet of the Ozarks is now operating in Alton, thanks to volunteers dedicated to providing formalwear, accessories and other assistance to teens who want to attend high school dances, but might face financial barriers. It is a local chapter of the national organization Becca's Closet, founded in 2003 by Rebecca Kirtman, a high school freshman from Florida who died in a car crash just months after her first collection of dresses. Alton group aims to see all teens have access to formalwear for dances
In the interest of helping local teens have a memorable experience at their high school formal, volunteers and the Alton Methodist Church have opened a chapter of Becca's Closet, a national nonprofit dedicated to assisting students who otherwise might not be able to afford the expenses normally associated with attending dances. more

Texas County resident Michael Wray, Jr., has been perfecting his football board game, You're The Coach, since he came up with the idea over 40 years ago. He is a Navy veteran and uses his current career as a long haul trucker delivering goods to military bases to make connections and promote the game. It's now in its second edition and available in West Plains at the Book Nook, 203 Washington Ave.

An Izard County, Ark., man suffered fatal injuries in a crash at 4:04 p.m. Friday on Highway 56 in Brockwell, an unincorporated community in Izard County about 14 miles east of Horseshoe Bend, according to the Arkansas State Police. more

Pickup truck crashes into tree, killing 25-year-old driver
A 25-year-old man from Plato perished in a crash that occurred at 8:48 a.m. Monday on AW Highway a mile north of Evening Shade in Texas County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. more
It’s a boy! John Craig Decker was the first baby born at Texas County Memorial Hospital in 2025, arriving at 4:09 p.m. Jan. 1, announced hospital officials, adding his parents, Nicholas and Leah Decker, Eminence, were “overjoyed to welcome their precious son, John.” Dr. Christopher Baldwin, obstetrician and gynecologist, and Dr. Kristina Grant, family medicine physician specializing in obstetrics, delivered baby John. He weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces, and measured 19 inches long. Jim and Wilda McNiell, along with Alice Wells, representatives of the TCMH Auxiliary, presented gifts and gift certificates to the new family. Local businesses, including West Plains Bank, Simmons Bank (locations in Cabool and Houston), Walmart, Forbes, Progressive Ozark Bank, Shelter Insurance (Airika Barnett-Wiseman), D&L Florist, People’s Bank of Cabool, Security Bank of the Ozarks, State Farm Insurance, S&R Insurance, the TCMH Healthcare Foundation and New Beginnings Church, donated gifts to celebrate the arrival.
