A town hall and candidate meet-and-greet held June 28 at Wages Brewing Company in West Plains featured Democratic candidates for county, state and U.S. office speaking on platform issues, plus live music from Elk Creek, Texas County, performers The Spellsingers. Speakers at the event were Democratic candidate for Howell County Coroner Jeff Collins of rural West Plains, Democratic candidate for Missouri 154th House District Representative JoJo Stewart of Willow Springs and Democratic Candidate for U.S. Congress Missouri 8th District Randi McCallian, Rolla. McCallian addressed topics such as Missouri’s high maternity and infant mortality rate in comparison to the rest of the county, and spoke critically of current 8th District Rep. Jason Smith, pointing to what she described as policy failures and a tendency to support big business at the expense of his constituency. The Howell County Sheriff’s Office recently finished a three-day training in conjunction with Missouri State Emergency Management Agency and Louisiana State University National Center for Biomedical Research and Training. The West Plains Police Department and West Plains Fire & Rescue Station No. 1 were also participants. The training course was designed to improve interagency collaboration during a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or explosive incident, explained Howell County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Angela Conboy. She noted the program enables members of the emergency community to recognize their roles and the roles of other first responder duties when preparing for and responding to disasters. She took fourth place in senior showmanship and is the daughter of Jon Johnson. Republican State Rep. Travis Smith of Twin Bridges, 155th House District, has received the exclusive backing of the Missouri Fire Fighters Association in in his bid for 33rd State Senate, his campaign announced. more
The Howell County Commission has declared its support for Howell County to be declared a Purple Heart County, with the issuance of a proclamation to that effect a step toward the installation of road signs along major roads in the county to recognize Purple Heart recipients. The Missouri Department of the Order of the Purple Heart facilitates the program, and last week, the proclamation was given to the department's Past Commander Walter Schley of Parkville, left. In return, a special recognition plaque was presented by Schley to the commission for its "dedication and support honoring America's combat wounded veterans becoming the Purple Heart County." Also there for the presentation were Purple Heart recipient Ray Weeks, center, and John T. Kirk Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1828 Auxiliary member Freda Evans.
